Story

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A tragic multivehicle crash on Interstate 40 in east Tennessee resulted in the deaths of two individuals this weekend, including a passerby who attempted to assist after an initial collision. The Knoxville Police Department reported that the incident occurred early Saturday morning, shortly before dawn, when officers responded to the scene. According to the police, the crash began with a rear-end collision between two vehicles, which caused one to roll over into the median. The passerby, who had stopped to help the occupants of the vehicle that remained in the travel lane, was struck by a private ambulance responding to the scene. Both the driver of the vehicle and the passerby were pronounced dead at the scene. In addition to the fatalities, three other individuals sustained injuries in the crash. The ambulance, which was not transporting any patients at the time, had a driver and a passenger who suffered minor injuries. The driver of the overturned vehicle, who was ejected during the collision, was transported to a Knoxville hospital with severe injuries. As of Saturday, no charges had been filed, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims involved in this tragic incident.
