A man has been charged in connection with a shooting incident in Dalston, east London, that left a nine-year-old girl seriously injured. The suspect has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at the Old Bailey on September 6. The shooting occurred on May 29, when a gunman on a stolen motorbike opened fire on Kingsland High Street, targeting the Evin Turkish restaurant where the girl was dining with her family. The young girl remains hospitalized in stable condition after undergoing major surgery, with her grandmother, Mary Paul, revealing that she is still on a ventilator and that doctors have been unable to remove the bullet. The girl's parents, IT professionals who relocated from India to Birmingham over two years ago, are reportedly devastated by the incident. Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, who oversees policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, described the charges as a significant development in a "painstaking and meticulous investigation." He commended community members who provided information to the police. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, leading the investigation, emphasized the ongoing nature of the case and urged anyone with information, particularly regarding a motorcycle seen in the area during the shooting, to come forward. Authorities are aware that potential witnesses may feel apprehensive about sharing details but encourage them to contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
