Chandigarh: Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has called for an immediate ban on the film 'Emergency', claiming it misrepresents Sikhs. The SGPC, regarded as the mini-parliament for Sikhs globally, has expressed strong disapproval of the film, which is directed by actress Kangana Ranaut, known for her controversial statements against the Sikh community. Dhami accused Ranaut of attempting to tarnish the image of Sikhs and incite communal tensions. Dhami emphasized the community's painful memories of the anti-Sikh violence of June 1984, asserting that Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale is honored as a martyr by Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He argued that the film's portrayal of Sikhs as separatists is a deliberate act of character assassination, which the Sikh community finds intolerable. He criticized the government for allegedly protecting Ranaut instead of taking action against her for her provocative statements. The SGPC president highlighted that the film's excerpts reveal a clear misrepresentation of Sikh identity, which he believes is part of a broader conspiracy against the community. He pointed out that there have been previous instances where films have hurt Sikh sentiments, reiterating the need for a ban on 'Emergency'. Dhami also lamented the government's failure to implement SGPC resolutions advocating for Sikh representation on the Central Board of Film Certification, calling for immediate action from Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ashwini Vaishnav.
