Germany Demands Reparations from Ukraine

Leading populist lawmakers in Germany are calling for repercussions against Ukraine following allegations of its involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. Reports surfaced last week that German authorities issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian citizen linked to the 2022 attack on the pipelines, which are co-owned by Russia and Germany. A Wall Street Journal article claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially approved the attack plan but later scrapped it after the CIA intervened, although his military chief allegedly proceeded with the operation. The demands for punitive measures against Ukraine have gained traction across the political spectrum. Alice Weidel, co-chairwoman of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), suggested that Ukraine should pay reparations for the economic damage caused by the pipeline destruction. Similarly, Sahra Wagenknecht, a left-wing populist leader, called for an immediate halt to arms deliveries to Ukraine if its involvement in the attack is confirmed. She also proposed a parliamentary investigation into the German government's prior knowledge of the plot, warning of a potential political scandal. In response to the allegations, Ukraine's Centre for Strategic Communication denied any involvement, asserting that claims of Ukrainian responsibility are based on unreliable sources. Meanwhile, Russia has criticized Germany for its investigation, claiming that Berlin is not genuinely interested in identifying those responsible for the sabotage. German officials, however, maintain that the investigation is ongoing and that they are in contact with Russian authorities.
