Hezbollah hands over military positions to Lebanese army in southern Lebanon

In Lebanon, a significant transition in military control has occurred recently. Following a ceasefire agreement reached on November 27, 2024, Hezbollah, the militant group engaged in a prolonged conflict with Israel, has begun ceding its military positions south of the Litani River to the Lebanese army. The ceasefire aimed to establish a balance of power, ensuring that only the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers could operate in the southern regions of the country. Under this arrangement, Hezbollah is obligated to dismantle its remaining military infrastructure in southern Lebanon and relocate its fighters north of the Litani River, which is approximately 30 kilometers from the Israeli border. As of early April 2025, it has been reported that out of 265 identified military positions held by Hezbollah in the affected areas, around 190 have been handed over to the Lebanese army. This strategic move signifies a substantial shift in the operational landscape of southern Lebanon. The ceasefire has not only required Hezbollah to alter its presence but also tasked Israel with completing the withdrawal of its troops from Lebanon, which has faced delays due to the retention of forces in key strategic locations deemed essential by Israel. Furthermore, tensions persist as Israel continues to launch strikes against what it identifies as Hezbollah infrastructure or members within Lebanon. Recently, discussions have taken place between U.S. officials and senior Lebanese figures regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah, indicating the United States' commitment to ensuring that the ceasefire terms are adhered to. Notably, U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, emphasized the urgency of implementing the disarming of Hezbollah and other militias. This comprehensive approach aims to stabilize the region and fulfill the conditions of the ceasefire while addressing security concerns of neighboring countries, particularly Israel, which has been historically at odds with Hezbollah's military capabilities and intentions.
