SNP MSP John Mason Faces Suspension Over Controversial Comments on Israel-Hamas Conflict

Mason's comment, made on X, suggested that if Israel intended to commit genocide, the death toll would be significantly higher. This remark has been labeled "utterly abhorrent" by party officials and has effectively led to his expulsion from the SNP. The controversy arose amid criticism of a meeting between Scottish External Affairs Secretary Angus Robertson and Israel's Deputy Ambassador to the UK, Daniela Grudsky. Mason defended his comments, stating that they were intended to provoke thought rather than offense, and expressed disappointment over the backlash. He claimed that his emails have been largely supportive despite the negative social media response. Mason's remarks have sparked internal dissent within the SNP, with some party members calling for further action against Robertson for his meeting with Grudsky. The SNP's Dalkeith branch has proposed a motion for the upcoming party conference to suspend Robertson for allegedly bringing the party into disrepute. As a result of the suspension, Mason will serve as an independent MSP until the party's internal review is completed.
