Since its launch in 2021, The EDISON Alliance, a collaborative initiative involving 170 partners, has successfully connected over 1 billion individuals to essential digital services across healthcare, education, and finance in more than 100 countries. This achievement was reached ahead of the initial target set for 2025, highlighting the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in addressing the global digital divide. Despite this progress, approximately 2.6 billion people remain unconnected to the internet, underscoring the ongoing challenges in achieving universal internet access. The Tony Blair Institute estimates that achieving universal internet access by 2030 will require an investment of $446 billion. This need is critical not only in developing nations but also in developed countries, where disparities in access to high-speed internet persist. The rise of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies further emphasizes the necessity for robust digital infrastructure to manage increasing data demands and connectivity needs. Digital literacy is another significant hurdle, as access to the internet alone is insufficient without the skills to utilize digital tools effectively. Programs like Norway's Digital Throughout Life initiative aim to equip individuals with the necessary skills for adapting to technological changes. Additionally, the mobile internet gender gap remains a pressing issue, with 15% of women lacking the tools to engage in the digital economy, which has economic implications.
