Story

Brussels (The Brussels Morning Newspaper) – European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has expressed strong support for Armenia's efforts to strengthen ties with the European Union. In a recent letter to Alen Simonyan, the Speaker of Armenia's National Assembly, Metsola acknowledged Armenia's commitment to enhancing its relationship with the EU, emphasizing the significance of the newly established EU-Armenia partnership agenda and the initiation of a visa liberalization dialogue. Metsola's correspondence highlights the importance of Armenia's proactive stance in prioritizing EU relations. She noted that the new partnership agenda and visa discussions are indicative of the growing collaboration between Armenia and the EU. The European Parliament President also expressed optimism about the potential for renewed cooperation between the Armenian National Assembly and the European Parliament's delegation focused on South Caucasus relations, particularly following the upcoming assembly of newly elected MPs. The European Union and Armenia have been working to deepen their cooperation across various sectors since the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) was signed in November 2017. Significant portions of this agreement have been provisionally applied since June 2018, with Armenia adopting a CEPA implementation roadmap in June 2019, which was later revised in 2021. The agreement fully came into effect on March 1, 2021, following approval from Armenia, all EU member states, and the European Parliament. As both parties continue to build on this framework, the future of EU-Armenia relations appears promising, with a focus on mutual development and integration.
