HARTFORD, Conn. – In a significant move to ease the tax-filing process for residents, Connecticut will join the IRS Direct File program for the 2025 tax season, as announced by Governor Ned Lamont and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. This initiative aims to provide taxpayers with a no-cost alternative to commercial tax preparation services, enhancing accessibility and affordability in filing federal tax returns. The IRS Direct File program, which began as a pilot in 12 states during the 2024 filing season, has already demonstrated its effectiveness. Over 140,000 taxpayers utilized the service, collectively claiming more than $90 million in refunds and saving approximately $5.6 million in filing fees. Governor Lamont emphasized that the Direct File tool will simplify the tax-filing process, allowing individuals to save both time and money by eliminating the need for paid tax software. The establishment of the Direct File program is a direct result of President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, which allocated additional resources to the IRS. This funding aims to enhance customer service across various platforms, ensuring that taxpayers can easily access the benefits and deductions they are entitled to. Secretary Yellen expressed her enthusiasm for the program's expansion, stating that it will not only save Connecticut residents time and money but also help them secure the tax benefits they deserve. With the successful pilot phase behind them, Connecticut is set to become the latest state to offer this valuable free service to its taxpayers.
