- The pitcher's future in the team remains uncertain.
CHICAGO — The New York Yankees have designated pitcher Enyel De Los Santos for assignment just over two weeks after acquiring him from the San Diego Padres at the trade deadline. The decision came as a surprise given the short duration of his stay with the team, especially following a challenging start with the Yankees. Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, noting that De Los Santos is better than his recent performances suggested. The move was necessitated by the need to create space for Will Warren, who made a spot start in the Yankees' 10-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Warren's five-inning outing allowed two runs, but he is expected to return to Triple-A following the game. The Yankees are managing a roster limit of 13 pitchers, and with only two pitchers having minor league options left, Boone opted against sending Luis Gil down, despite discussions about reconfiguring the rotation. The Yankees acquired De Los Santos, along with a minor league reliever, in exchange for outfielder Brandon Lockridge, who is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this offseason. Meanwhile, Lou Trivino has begun a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset, moving closer to a return after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery. Additionally, catcher Jose Trevino is also on a rehab assignment as the Yankees assess his recovery from a quad strain.
