In Washington, D.C. on December 12, 2024, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) announced the selection of recipients for the 2025 APhA Awards and Honors Program. This prestigious recognition program highlights notable contributions to the pharmacy profession across various categories including practitioners, researchers, and student pharmacists. Among the awardees, Stephen W. Schondelmeyer of Minneapolis, MN, was honored with the Remington Honor Medal, the highest accolade given by APhA, recognizing his distinguished service to American pharmacy over several years. This medal is particularly significant as it was established in 1918 in tribute to Joseph P. Remington, a notable figure in the field of pharmacy who made considerable contributions to community medicine, manufacturing, and education. Schondelmeyer’s extensive career spans over fifty years, impacting numerous aspects of pharmacy practice, from improving drug access and affordability to shaping policies that influence pharmacists’ roles and patient care in society. His work includes providing insights into drug pricing and reimbursement, which have been crucial in advancing pharmacy-related public policy. Currently, Schondelmeyer serves as a professor of Pharmaceutical Economics at the University of Minnesota and directs the PRIME Institute, which conducts vital economic and public policy research regarding pharmacists' roles. The announcement of his recognition also reflects broader efforts in the pharmacy community to enhance its visibility and demonstrate the value of pharmacists to the public and healthcare stakeholders. Schondelmeyer’s contributions extend further with his extensive publication record which includes 930 invited presentations, 260 peer-reviewed papers, and numerous technical reports that analyze drug supply chain challenges and pharmacy policy issues. His expertise has led to his active involvement in national and state-level task forces aimed at advocating for pharmacy’s value and improving healthcare outcomes. With the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition scheduled for March 21-24, 2025, in Nashville, TN, where recipients will be officially recognized, this accolade not only honors Schondelmeyer’s past achievements but also inspires future advancements within the pharmacy profession.
