Delhi faces severe air pollution crisis in October 2024

In the past few days, air quality in Delhi, India has drastically worsened, with pollution levels measuring 20-25 times above the World Health Organization's recommended limits. Experts attribute this alarming deterioration to a combination of factors, including the upcoming Diwali festival, which typically sees an increase in firecracker usage, and the annual practice of burning crop stubble by farmers in neighboring states during the winter months. The situation is expected to decline further due to adverse weather conditions, contributing to the capital's regular air quality crisis. Pollution data indicates that PM 2.5 levels have peaked at 350 micrograms per cubic meter, surpassing the thresholds for severe air quality, which ranges from 400 to 500 micrograms. During the winter season, Delhi consistently experiences high levels of pollution caused by factors such as low winds, vehicular emissions, and construction activities. Residents often face severe health risks from exposure to airborne particulates which can deeply infiltrate the lungs. In light of this crisis, the Delhi government has implemented measures including a complete ban on the manufacture and usage of fireworks ahead of Diwali, although compliance remains a challenge. Furthermore, the Graded Response Action Plan has imposed restrictions on activities involving coal, firewood, and diesel generators, and authorities have advised residents to limit outdoor activities.
