Story

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner and the current leader in strikeouts, is determined to continue his pitching career despite facing injuries this season. Since turning 40 last month, Scherzer has made only one start for the Texas Rangers and recently completed a 25-pitch bullpen session. Following the session, he expressed confidence in his ability to compete at a high level, stating, “I’ve been able to go out there and compete, but I haven’t been fully myself.” Scherzer, who has a record of 2-4 with a 3.89 ERA this season, was placed on the 15-day injured list due to shoulder fatigue. He acknowledged the challenges of trying to regain form mid-season, likening it to conducting spring training during the regular season. “My shoulder, my arm for the most part, feels really good,” he noted, emphasizing the difficulties he faced in understanding his limits while recovering. Looking ahead, Scherzer plans to throw a longer bullpen session on Sunday, feeling optimistic after his recent practice. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that Scherzer is in a good physical condition, which bodes well for his return to the mound. The Rangers acquired Scherzer from the Mets last summer, with the pitcher opting into the final year of his contract, valued at $43.3 million, while the Mets cover a significant portion of that salary.
