GM claims No. 2 spot for EV sales in the US
- General Motors has sold over 370,000 electric vehicles in North America since 2016.
- In the third quarter of 2024, GM's EV sales outperformed Ford's sales.
- This marks a significant achievement in GM's efforts to establish itself in the electric vehicle market.
In the third quarter of 2024, General Motors announced that it sold 32,000 electric vehicles in the United States, surpassing its competitor Ford by about 8,600 units. Since 2016, GM has sold over 370,000 electric vehicles across North America, indicating significant growth in its EV market presence. Despite achieving this milestone, Tesla continues to be the dominant player in the EV market with over 5 million vehicles sold since 2008. GM's growth in electric vehicle sales can be attributed to the introduction of a dedicated EV platform, previously known as Ultium, and their joint ventures with LG and Samsung SDI to produce battery cells. While GM's current sales figures are promising, the company has acknowledged the production challenges and shifting consumer demand that may hinder its goal of producing 1 million EVs by 2025.
