Sarah Storey competes in ninth Paralympics at 46 in Paris

Dame Sarah Storey expressed her disappointment over the decision to have the women’s C5 time trial at the Paralympics be half the distance of the men’s event. After winning her 18th Paralympic gold medal in Paris 2024, she highlighted that this was the shortest time trial in Paralympic history. Storey emphasized the need for parity in Para cycling, especially after recent advancements in women’s cycling. She noted that the race distance was a missed opportunity to showcase the sport effectively. Despite the setback, Storey maintained focus on her performance, overcoming a 7.18 seconds deficit at the first checkpoint to secure victory. This win marked her continued success on the bike, following a remarkable career that began in swimming. Storey’s achievement at these Games further solidified her status as Britain’s most successful Paralympian, with a total of 29 medals, including 16 from swimming. The decision to shorten the women’s event was reportedly made due to a busy schedule of 19 races and medal ceremonies on that day. Storey, while acknowledging the logistical challenges, called for future events to ensure equal race lengths for men and women. She expressed hope that this would not be repeated, as it undermines the progress made in women’s sports. British rider Fran Brown also competed, securing silver in the women’s C1-3 time trial. Brown echoed Storey’s sentiments, wishing for a longer course to better showcase their capabilities.
