Pentagon plans to permanently station F-35s in South Korea for security boost

In a significant move to bolster defense capabilities, the Pentagon is exploring the option to permanently station F-35 fighter jets in South Korea. This decision comes as a response to increasing threats from North Korea and China's ambitions in the region. Up until now, the United States Air Force has been rotating various types of fighter jets to South Korea, but with the rising tensions, a more permanent presence is being contemplated. The proposed location for these F-35s might be Kunsan Air Base, which would allow for greater synergy in operations with South Korea's own growing fleet of aircraft. The report, stemming from The Korean Herald, indicates that the stationing could commence with a single squadron of F-35s while allowing for other squadrons to be deployed rotationally. This upgrade in military presence is crucial, as it would significantly enhance the overall capabilities of the U.S. Air Force in the region. Currently, the air force's assets in South Korea consist largely of older-generation F-16 Fighting Falcons, with various advanced jets like the F-22s and F-35s only deployed temporarily for training exercises. Furthermore, plans are also in place for the Republic of Korea Air Force (RoKAF) to station twenty of its own F-35As at Kunsan starting in 2027. This coordination would enable joint operations between the U.S. Air Force and RoKAF, which is vital for enhancing North Korean deterrence and strengthening regional security. Currently, RoKAF operates thirty-nine F-35As, showcasing a significant leap in their combat capabilities since the first delivery of these jets in 2018.
