The Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison has unveiled a permanent display honoring Lt. Col. James Megellas, a decorated war hero from Fond du Lac who served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. Megellas, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 103, is recognized as the most decorated officer in his division, having received over 25 medals, including two Purple Hearts and two Silver Stars. His sons expressed pride in having their father's military items showcased in a place he considered home. The display features a jump jacket uniform and photographs that narrate Megellas' contributions to the war and his dedication to his country. Although many of his medals and artifacts are not yet on display, the museum plans to exhibit them in the future. Curator Kevin Hampton emphasized the importance of the display as a focal point for educational purposes, particularly for school groups and the general public. Megellas' legacy includes not only his military service but also his commitment to representing the 82nd Airborne and Wisconsin throughout his life. He frequently visited troops in the Middle East, demonstrating his ongoing dedication to service. His children shared that he often joked about wanting to die with his boots on, reflecting his lifelong passion for serving his country. The museum aims to honor Megellas' story and educate visitors about his significant role in history, ensuring that future generations can learn from his experiences and the sacrifices made by those who served in the military.
