The Brazilian Navy's warning of rough seas has set the stage for the sixth edition of the Itacoatiara Big Wave surf event, which took place at Itacoatiara beach in Rio de Janeiro. This year’s competition attracted both national and international surfers, who braved waves exceeding 13 feet in height. The event featured a one-day main competition with 16 teams participating, each consisting of two surfers who alternated between riding the waves and operating their team’s jet ski. Among the competitors were renowned surfers accustomed to the massive waves of Portugal’s Nazaré, including Pedro Scooby and Lucas Chumbo. Despite the challenging conditions, these experienced athletes embraced the opportunity to tackle the formidable waves at Itacoatiara. Italian surfer Francisco Porcella remarked on the unique challenges presented by the beach, highlighting the distinct nature of the waves compared to those he typically encounters. Itacoatiara beach, located to the west of Rio de Janeiro, is celebrated for its powerful beach break waves, making it a prime location for big wave surfing. The event not only showcased the skills of elite surfers but also underscored the beach's reputation as a hotspot for extreme water sports. As the competition unfolded, spectators were treated to thrilling displays of athleticism and courage, reinforcing the allure of big wave surfing in Brazil.
