New Kashmir Rail Bridge Set to Transform Connectivity and Economy

A monumental rail bridge in Kashmir, towering 35 meters above the Eiffel Tower, is poised to revolutionize transportation in the region. The bridge, part of a 272-kilometer all-weather railway line connecting Jammu to the Kashmir valley, is expected to facilitate its first train run soon between the Bakkal and Kauri areas. While the completion timeline remains uncertain, experts highlight the strategic advantages this infrastructure could provide, particularly in enhancing military logistics along the sensitive border. Giridhar Rajagopalan, deputy managing director of Afcons Infrastructure, emphasized the bridge's role in enabling year-round transport of military personnel and equipment to border areas. However, local sentiment is mixed, with some residents expressing concerns that the project may increase government control over the valley. The bridge's construction faced significant challenges due to its location in a highly seismic zone, necessitating extensive studies and modifications to ensure its resilience against extreme weather conditions. Economically, the new railway line is anticipated to boost the region's agricultural sector by providing farmers with direct access to markets in southern India, potentially increasing their incomes. A direct train service between Jammu and Srinagar could also reduce travel time and costs, thereby enhancing tourism prospects. Nonetheless, the project faces hurdles, including a recent rise in militant activity, which has shifted from the Kashmir valley to the relatively peaceful Jammu region, raising security concerns for the new infrastructure.
