Iran recruits criminals for plots against Jews in Europe

In May 2023, a Paris court detained and charged a couple, Abdelkrim S. and Sabrina B., for their involvement in Iranian plots targeting Jews in Germany and France. This case, known as "Marco Polo," highlights a resurgence of Iranian state-sponsored terrorism in Europe, particularly in light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The French General Directorate for Internal Security reported that since 2015, Iranian secret services have resumed a targeted killing policy, with a focus on instilling fear among political opposition and Jewish communities in Europe. Abdelkrim S., previously sentenced to 10 years for a murder in Marseille, was released on probation in July 2023. He is believed to be the main operative for an Iran-sponsored terrorist cell planning violent acts in France and Germany. Investigators suggest that he was connected to a major drug trafficker from Lyon, who may have visited Iran recently. The group aimed to attack a former employee of an Israeli security firm and several Israeli-German citizens. Despite being on probation, Abdelkrim S. allegedly made multiple trips to Germany for reconnaissance, claiming he was only shopping. French authorities also suspect the cell of planning to set fire to four Israeli-owned businesses in southern France between late December 2023 and early January 2024. The investigation indicates a broader strategy by Iranian intelligence to target civilians and create a climate of fear. The case underscores the increasing threat posed by Iranian operatives in Europe, as authorities work to dismantle these networks and prevent further acts of violence against Jewish communities and Israeli interests.
