- Political leaders are demanding accountability from the Maharashtra Home Minister, highlighting the growing issue of gang violence in the region.
On August 25, a police inspector named Ratnadeep Gaikwad was attacked in Kothrud while responding to a reported quarrel near the Sasane Nagar railway gate. The assailants, believed to be part of the notorious koyta gang, used a machete to inflict serious injuries to Gaikwad's head before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. Fortunately, he is currently out of danger and receiving medical treatment. Gaikwad is affiliated with the Wanavdi police station. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding public safety and law enforcement effectiveness in Pune. Political figures, including NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, have criticized Maharashtra's Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, questioning the apparent lack of fear criminals have towards the police. Sule's comments reflect a growing frustration among citizens and officials regarding the increasing violence and lawlessness in the region. The koyta gang has been linked to several violent incidents in Pune, indicating a troubling trend of escalating attacks. Earlier this year, members of this gang were involved in brutal assaults, including a serious attack on an individual in Hadapsar and another incident where a shop owner was attacked and robbed. These events highlight the urgent need for effective law enforcement strategies to combat gang violence. As the investigation into Gaikwad's attack continues, the police are under pressure to apprehend the assailants and restore public confidence in their ability to maintain order. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with organized crime and the importance of community safety.
