MarineLabs boosts port safety and productivity in B.C. with AI

These projects are funded through the Province's Integrated Marketplace program, which is managed by Innovate BC. The flagship product, CoastAware, provides real-time and predictive coastal intelligence, including localized weather insights and coastal imagery. The Vancouver Island Ferry Company (VIFC) is utilizing CoastAware to improve the Hullo Ferry service between Vancouver and Nanaimo. By accessing real-time data on wave and wind conditions, VIFC can make better scheduling decisions, thereby increasing the reliability and safety of ferry operations. This application demonstrates how technology can optimize transportation services in challenging marine environments. At the Port of Prince Rupert, AltaGas is leveraging historical data from CoastAware to inform the development of a new export terminal. Engineers are using three years of data collected from similar marine areas to guide their planning and construction efforts. This historical insight is crucial for ensuring that the new terminal meets safety and operational standards. Additionally, the Pacific Pilotage Authority (PPA) is employing CoastAware to enhance the scheduling of marine pilots at both ports. By utilizing accurate, location-specific weather data, the PPA can mitigate risks associated with pilot transfers, ultimately contributing to safer maritime operations. Overall, these initiatives highlight the importance of integrating advanced technology in maritime operations to improve safety and efficiency.
