In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Stone expressed that they feel they have exhausted their commentary on Trump, stating, 'I don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.' This decision comes after years of navigating the complexities of political satire during multiple presidential elections. Stone elaborated on the challenges of satirizing political contests, noting that the focus on elections often overshadows the fun of creating the show. He mentioned that the 2024 election, featuring Trump as the Republican nominee against Vice-President Kamala Harris, is particularly overwhelming. The creators aim to maintain the show's irreverent spirit without being bogged down by the political climate. The decision to skip the upcoming election contrasts sharply with their approach during the 2016 election, when they quickly produced an episode in response to Trump's unexpected victory. At that time, they incorporated a character inspired by Trump into the show, reflecting the political landscape of the time. However, the creators now feel that the current political environment has become too chaotic for effective satire. The delay in the show's return is also attributed to the need for Paramount+ to prepare adequately for the new season.
