Story

Xcel Energy has partnered with Food for Thought Denver to address food insecurity among children in Colorado as part of its Day of Service initiative. This collaboration involves volunteers packing bags of food for students who may not have access to meals over the weekend. Founded by Bob Bell in 2012, Food for Thought Denver has expanded significantly, now serving 18,000 children across 75 schools, providing between 35,000 and 40,000 bags of food each month. The bags contain non-perishable food sufficient for a family of four to have two meals and snacks, along with a recipe and ingredients for a more complex meal. The organization operates entirely on volunteer support, with no paid employees, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in their mission. Bob Bell highlighted the impact of volunteers, stating that their participation invigorates the organization’s efforts. During a recent packing event, Xcel Energy employees expressed their enthusiasm for contributing to the cause. Robert Holschuh, an accounting consultant, noted the positive energy and sense of fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community. This volunteer opportunity was organized independently by the employees, who plan to return for the official Day of Service in September 2024. This initiative marks the 13th annual Day of Service for Xcel Energy, which collaborates with around 40 non-profit organizations statewide. The event is scheduled for September 13 and 14, 2024, aiming to further engage employees in community service and support local children in need.
