Three Russian Warships Arrive in Cuba

Three war vessels from Russia’s Baltic Fleet arrived in Havana, Cuba, over the weekend for a four-day visit, marking a significant moment in the growing relationship between the two nations. The ships, which include the training vessel Smólny, the patrol ship Neustrahimiy, and the offshore oil tanker Yelnya, are scheduled to conclude their visit on Tuesday. According to Russian state news agency Tass, the crew will engage in a series of activities, including courtesy calls to Cuban Navy officials and visits to cultural sites in Havana. Cuban defense officials hailed the arrival of the Russian fleet as a “historical practice” and a demonstration of “friendship and collaboration.” This visit follows a similar one in June, when a Russian flotilla, including a nuclear submarine, conducted naval exercises in the Caribbean. The U.S. Northern Command has downplayed any potential threat from Russia’s naval presence in the Atlantic. However, the relationship is complicated by reports of Cuban citizens being conscripted to fight in Ukraine, allegedly under false pretenses. Despite claims of dismantling recruitment networks, informal channels reportedly continue to facilitate this enlistment. As Cuba grapples with severe economic challenges, Russian support has become increasingly vital. The resumption of oil shipments from Russia is seen as crucial for alleviating fuel shortages in Cuba, with Russian officials suggesting that collaboration in oil production could further strengthen their partnership.
