Christian Yelich has Successful Back Surgery
- Christian Yelich underwent successful back surgery for the Milwaukee Brewers.
- The team is optimistic that he will recover in time for the start of the 2025 season.
- Brewers president of baseball operations believes Yelich will be ready for the upcoming season.
Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations, Matt Arnold, announced that outfielder Christian Yelich underwent back surgery on Friday, a procedure expected to facilitate his return for the start of the 2025 season. Arnold expressed optimism about Yelich's recovery timeline, stating, “By doing this sooner, it does allow him to hopefully be ready for opening day next year.” However, he acknowledged the unpredictable nature of back surgeries, emphasizing that recovery can vary. At 32 years old, Yelich was enjoying a standout season, leading the National League with a .315 batting average and a .406 on-base percentage before being placed on the injured list in late July. Arnold noted the long-standing nature of Yelich's back issues, suggesting that the surgery was a necessary step to alleviate ongoing pain and improve his performance. “It’s been obvious he’s had a back issue for a long time,” Arnold remarked, highlighting the physical demands of Yelich's playing style. Yelich's performance this season marked a resurgence, reminiscent of his early years with the Brewers when he won the NL MVP in 2018. He earned his third All-Star selection this year, contributing 11 home runs, 42 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases in just 73 games. Despite his absence, teammate Murphy emphasized Yelich's continued influence in the locker room, noting his strong connections with fellow players and the respect he commands for his work ethic.
