Californians demand Gov. Gavin Newsom for highway patrol help amid crime surge

In California, former U.S. Representative Barbara Lee is making her political intentions known as she filed official paperwork for a mayoral run in Oakland. Residents there have initiated a petition urging Governor Gavin Newsom to deploy California Highway Patrol officers to alleviate pressures on local law enforcement. Vallejo has been struggling with increased crime and a shortage of police officers, having only 75 active officers to fill 129 positions. This situation has sparked community concerns over safety and response times, as reported crimes have escalated, including a significant rise in murders from the previous year. The local community, voicing their concerns through over 3,500 signatures on the petition, believes that state support is crucial in combating these dire conditions. Governor Newsom has addressed the calls for assistance, while also emphasizing the need for localities to resolve their internal staffing issues.
