New public park opens at notorious Tunitas Creek Beach

In the United States, specifically in San Mateo County, a significant transformation is set to take place with the opening of Don Horsley County Park at Tunitas Creek Beach on August 17. This park, which has a history of being associated with lawlessness and wild parties, will now serve as a free public oceanfront park. The area, located eight miles south of Half Moon Bay, has long been known for its rugged beauty but also for the challenges posed by trespassing and illegal activities. Until now, there were no official access points to the beach, forcing visitors to navigate unofficial trails, some of which crossed private property.

The property was previously owned by musician Chris Isaak, who sold it in 2017 for $5 million to the Peninsula Open Space Trust. In 2020, the trust sold it to San Mateo County for a reduced price of $3.2 million. The park's development was made possible through a $19.6 million revitalization project funded by a mix of private donations, county funds, and state support. This project, which began in 2023, includes essential facilities such as restrooms, a ranger station, and an amphitheater, along with improved accessibility features and a parking lot for 80 vehicles.

Emma Gonzalez, the interim director of the San Mateo County Parks Department, emphasized the park's welcoming nature and its breathtaking views. The park aims to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for visitors, with strict regulations against drugs, alcohol, and camping. Additionally, there will be no lifeguards on duty, and visitors are advised to be cautious of rip currents. The park's opening was delayed due to landslides caused by heavy winter rains, but it is now ready to welcome the public.

Named after former County Supervisor Don Horsley, who played a crucial role in its establishment, the park represents a new chapter for Tunitas Creek Beach. San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller described it as a jewel that will protect sensitive coastal resources while offering new opportunities for people to connect with nature. The park's opening marks a significant milestone in the San Mateo County parks system, being the first major new public beach in nearly 60 years.
