Ukrainian drones obliterate US armored brigade in Germany exercises

In April and May 2026, military exercises known as Combined Resolve took place in Germany, involving approximately 3,500 U.S. personnel from the Army's 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. The U.S. brigade was tasked with assaulting positions defended by Ukrainian troops from the 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems Forces, known as Nemesis. During these exercises, Ukrainian drone operators effectively utilized reconnaissance and attack drones to target U.S. armored vehicles, which were rendered vulnerable due to dust clouds they kicked up, making them easily detectable. The rapid success of the Ukrainian drones led to the U.S. forces having to regenerate destroyed vehicles repeatedly to continue the exercise. Despite having standard electronic warfare and counter-drone systems, the U.S. brigade struggled against the innovative tactics employed by the Ukrainian forces. As the exercise progressed, U.S. troops adapted their strategies, improving camouflage and electronic warfare techniques. Ukrainian troops also assisted the Americans in learning how to use drones more effectively for offensive operations. This exercise highlighted the evolving nature of modern warfare, particularly the effectiveness of drone technology in combat scenarios. The Pentagon has since recognized the importance of these lessons, testing Ukrainian drones for potential procurement and increasing the number of U.S. personnel sent to Ukraine to study drone warfare. The experience gained from these exercises is crucial for the U.S. military as it seeks to adapt to the changing dynamics of warfare, especially in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
