Michigan troops lost everything in Iran strikes and now need your deodorant

Service members from Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan suffered a devastating loss when Iranian missile and drone strikes hit their housing areas in the Middle East, destroying all personal belongings in resulting fires. The strikes specifically targeted living quarters rather than equipment areas or airfields, leaving troops without basic necessities like toiletries, clothing, and personal items. While uniforms and outer clothing have been replaced through official channels, service members still lack essential personal items.

VFW Post 1136 in Wyandotte, Michigan, responded to this crisis after receiving a request for assistance from the Selfridge Family Assistance Center. Post Commander Tracy Nagy and Auxiliary Chaplain Kelly Stec have organized a community donation drive to collect specific items including socks, underwear, deodorant, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and basic toiletries. The VFW post has already gathered some supplies, with a box of toiletries visible on stage at their facility, but organizers emphasize that much more is needed to adequately support the affected troops.

The donation effort represents what organizers describe as a tangible way for community members to support deployed service members beyond symbolic gestures like displaying flags or yellow ribbons. The VFW leadership has set an ambitious goal of overwhelming the troops with donations so they receive more supplies than they actually need. Community members are encouraged to add extra items to their regular shopping trips, such as picking up an additional bottle of shampoo or using coupons for two-for-one toothpaste purchases.

The collection point has been established at the VFW Post 1136 facility located at 633 Ford Avenue in Wyandotte. Organizers stress that even small contributions costing only a few dollars can make a significant difference in the lives of service members who have volunteered to put their lives on the line for their country. The drive emphasizes collective responsibility, with organizers noting that no single person can address this need alone and that the community as a whole benefits when everyone contributes to supporting those who serve.
