Zach Wilson wants to be the Saints' No. 2 quarterback

In the New Orleans Saints' second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, the quarterback competition for the backup role behind starter Tyler Shough took center stage. Shough did not play, leaving Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson to split the snaps. Rattler started and completed 8 of 11 passes for 42 yards, but he also took two sacks and lost a fumble. The Saints' opening drive started at the Jacksonville 9-yard line after a turnover, and they scored a touchdown on an Audric Estime run. They also added a field goal during Rattler's time on the field. Wilson replaced Rattler in the second quarter and led two scoring drives, finishing the game 11-of-16 for 145 yards and a touchdown. He also led a drive in the third quarter that ended with a missed field goal. After the game, Wilson expressed his desire to move up the depth chart, saying he would love to be the No. 2 quarterback and that he chose New Orleans for the opportunity to compete. He noted that his experience from playing in many games has helped the game slow down for him. Head coach Kellen Moore did not commit to any changes in practice reps, but he acknowledged Rattler did some positive things. The performance could influence the final 53-man roster decisions as the preseason continues.
