Ken Paxton seeks financial help as Texas Republicans worry about Senate race

In Texas, Ken Paxton is actively campaigning for a Senate seat, focusing on tax deductions and attempting to unify his party after a contentious primary. His campaign has faced challenges, as he is currently polling closely with Democrat James Talarico, raising concerns among Texas Republicans about potentially losing a statewide race for the first time in three decades. Despite these challenges, Paxton's campaign has recently claimed the backing of 18 out of 24 Republican members in Texas's US House delegation, which they interpret as a sign of unity. However, Talarico has been gaining momentum with a populist economic message that resonates across party lines, and he has significantly outspent Paxton on advertising, with $21 million compared to Paxton's $100,000 since the runoff. This early advantage in advertising could prove crucial as the race progresses.

As the election approaches, Paxton has warned his supporters about Talarico's efforts to present himself as a moderate Democrat, which he argues is misleading. The Republican establishment, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has expressed confidence in their strategy and funding for the race, indicating that major super PACs like MAGA Inc. may need to invest heavily to support Paxton's campaign. This situation reflects a broader concern within the GOP about maintaining control in Texas, a state that has been a Republican stronghold for decades.

In addition to the financial and strategic challenges, not all Republicans are fully on board with Paxton's campaign. Some, like Erik Gomez, the mayor of Sabinal, have expressed hesitance to formally endorse him, citing past disagreements. This division within the party could complicate Paxton's efforts to rally support as he heads into the general election, where the stakes are high for both him and the Republican Party in Texas.
