Man suffers shark bite during fishing trip off Ireland

On August 11, 2026, a man was mauled by a shark while on a pleasure fishing trip off the south coast of Ireland. The incident occurred around 4:16 PM when the man, along with four others, was aboard a small five-meter boat near the Waterford coast. Emergency services were alerted after receiving a 999/112 call reporting a leg injury caused by a shark bite. The Irish Coast Guard's Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Dublin coordinated the response, dispatching a helicopter and lifeboats to the scene.

The injured man was winched aboard the Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 117, and transported to Cork University Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, none of the other individuals on the boat sustained injuries during the incident. Eolan Walsh, the coxswain in charge of the vessel, noted that this was the first time he had encountered a shark bite in his three decades of service with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

Social media users quickly reacted to the news, with some speculating that the shark involved was a Blue Shark, which had been caught by mistake. Reports indicated that the shark bit the man while the crew was attempting to free it. The victim is reportedly recovering from his injuries, and the incident has sparked discussions about shark encounters in Irish waters.

In 2018, a man from Belfast suffered severe injuries from a Blue Shark while reeling it in on his fishing boat. Such occurrences raise awareness about the presence of sharks in Irish waters and the potential risks associated with fishing activities in these areas.
