Palisades Village reopens after $100 million rebuild, marking a milestone for fire-ravaged community

Nineteen months after the Pacific Palisades wildfire destroyed more than 5,000 homes and displaced tens of thousands of residents, the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood is marking a significant recovery milestone with the reopening of Palisades Village, a popular shopping and entertainment complex. The reopening, scheduled for August 15, 2026, comes after a $100 million rebuild funded by developer Rick Caruso, who owns the property. The event features a ribbon-cutting ceremony, shopping experiences, tastings, family-friendly activities, and entertainment, signaling a step toward normalcy for the community.

Caruso, a prominent developer and former mayoral candidate, has been a vocal critic of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass's handling of the wildfire and city governance. He spent over $100 million of his own money on his unsuccessful 2022 mayoral campaign against Bass. Despite the destruction of the surrounding commercial corridor, where many local businesses were reduced to ashes, Caruso emphasized the importance of reopening the village as a symbol of resilience. He stated, "The way we reopen is a sign throughout the city that’s suffering in so many ways that we actually are resilient. We’re on a mission to bring back this city."

The reopening is seen as a crucial step for the local economy and community morale. Traci Park, LA City Council member for the 11th District, who has worked closely with Caruso on recovery efforts, called it "one of the biggest developments in terms of spurring overall recovery, but specifically local business economic recovery." She added, "While there is still a great deal of work ahead, this reopening reflects the resilience and determination of the Palisades business community and offers a meaningful sign of healing, hope, and moving forward together."

The village, which has served as a hub for Hollywood types and locals since 2018, will feature both legacy and new businesses. The Netflix-run Bay Theatre will return, along with Jennifer Meyer Jewelry, which gained fame after actress Jennifer Aniston wore its pieces in the 2006 film "The Break-Up." Caruso has stressed the importance of ensuring the revamped village is clean, safe, and free of toxins, given the fire's aftermath.

Personal losses have deeply affected Caruso and his family; both his daughter and son lost their homes in the blaze, and he and his wife lost a family home. Despite these challenges, Caruso views the reopening as just one chapter in the Palisades' comeback story. The event is a positive milestone for a community still grappling with the long road to recovery, as new homes are being built and businesses are returning.
