Conradh na Gaeilge highlights Irish unity's potential impact on language rights

Róisín Nic Liam, a doctoral researcher, presented her findings on how Irish unity could be a transformative opportunity for the language and the Gaeltacht, emphasizing the need for language rights to be enshrined in law. She highlighted the risk of the language being treated as a bargaining chip in political negotiations. Another speaker, Eibhlín Ní Lionáird, pointed to the success of the Fleadh Cheoil in Belfast as a potential model for promoting Irish and Gaelic culture. Julian de Spáinn, the general secretary of Conradh na Gaeilge, discussed the detrimental effects of partition on the growth of the Irish language, noting that while the percentage of people in Leinster who acknowledge having some Irish has increased significantly, the figure remains much lower in Northern Ireland.
