What happened
In the United Kingdom, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has faced significant challenges in recovering from a cyber attack that occurred in August of the previous year. This attack halted production for over a month, severely impacting sales and economic growth. As JLR began to recover, the onset of the Iran war created further complications, leading to higher costs and supply issues. The company reported a revenue of £6 billion for the three months ending in June, marking a 9.6 percent decline compared to the same period the previous year. The conflict in the Middle East disrupted markets, contributing to a 9.2 percent decrease in vehicle sales to car dealers during the first quarter. Additionally, a fire at a major component supplier at the start of the quarter and the planned wind down of outgoing Jaguar models exacerbated the situation. As a result, pre-tax profits fell to £109 million, down from £351 million a year ago, while retail variable marketing expenses increased from 4.1 percent to 7.1 percent. The adjusted Ebit margin also decreased from 4 percent to 2.8 percent. JLR, owned by Tata Motors, has also been grappling with a decline in its Chinese market and the ongoing impact of US tariffs. Despite these challenges, P B Balaji, the CEO of JLR, expressed optimism about the strong demand for their brands and the upcoming launch of four new products, including the Range Rover Electric and the Jaguar Type 01. The company has announced plans to cut hundreds of jobs to recover £1.7 billion in costs associated with the cyber attack, which has been a significant factor in their recent struggles.
