Grandmother convicted after grandson falls from car and dies

In November 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, when a 7-year-old boy fell out of a car window and was struck by another vehicle on I-97. Lorraine Marie O'Neill, the child's grandmother, was driving with her grandson in a car seat in the back. As they approached Benfield Boulevard, the boy fell out of the rear passenger side window, landing on the roadway. O'Neill continued driving for 11 miles before realizing her grandson was missing. Investigators revealed that she had allowed the child to play with the power window, and the child lock was not engaged at the time of the incident. This negligence led to the boy's tragic death, which was witnessed by several individuals, including first responders. Following the incident, O'Neill faced legal consequences for her actions. On August 13, 2026, she was convicted of one count of neglect of a minor, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a potential fine of up to $5,000. Her sentencing is scheduled for October 2.
