Eritrean man convicted of raping pensioner outside London church

Bruke Desalagne, a 33-year-old Eritrean man, was convicted of raping an elderly man outside St John's church in Harrow, north London. The attack occurred around midnight on July 23 last year, when Desalagne dragged the heavily intoxicated victim from a bench to a grass verge behind church hoarding. The assault lasted approximately 20 minutes, during which cars and a double-decker bus passed nearby. A witness observed the attack from her window and alerted police, leading to Desalagne's arrest at the scene. CCTV footage from a council camera captured the defendant dragging the victim and pausing the assault whenever members of the public walked past.

During the trial at Harrow Crown Court, Desalagne used an interpreter and initially claimed he was trying to help the drunk victim. However, after being shown the CCTV footage, he stopped the interview, consulted his solicitor, and refused to speak further or testify. Prosecutor Simon Shannon highlighted how the footage showed Desalagne moving the victim from the bench to the grassy area to carry out the assault. Defense counsel Bibi Ihuomah argued there was no evidence of rape and urged jurors to avoid a knee-jerk reaction. The defendant remained emotionless throughout the proceedings, sipping water as the incriminating footage was played.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was described as a defenceless, vulnerable, elderly man. Detective constable Luke Revill characterized Desalagne as a dangerous offender who specifically targeted the pensioner. The swift response by members of the public and police ensured the perpetrator was apprehended immediately. Desalagne was charged the following day and remanded in custody by the courts. The case underscores the importance of public vigilance in preventing and reporting violent crimes.
