JD Vance demands DOJ probe into alleged fraud in transgender treatments for minors

In the United States, Vice President JD Vance has urged the Department of Justice to investigate a recent report from the Health and Human Services (HHS) that alleges fraudulent practices by some hospitals and healthcare providers regarding gender-affirming treatments for minors. The report, titled 'Wolves in White Coats: How Doctors and Hospitals Pushed and Profited from the Fraud of 'Gender Medicine,' outlines claims exceeding $60 million for treatments such as puberty blockers billed from 2015 to 2025. It highlights a concerning trend where healthcare providers may have misdiagnosed patients to secure insurance coverage for these procedures.

The HHS report attributes the increase in gender-affirming treatments to policies enacted during the Biden administration, which aimed to expand access to healthcare for transgender individuals. Following President Biden's inauguration in January 2021, he signed Executive Order 13988, which focused on preventing discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. This executive order mandated that children should have access to necessary healthcare without facing discrimination, thereby promoting the coverage of gender-affirming treatments.

In his letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche, Vance expressed his concerns regarding the findings of the HHS report, emphasizing the need for accountability among healthcare providers who may have engaged in fraudulent billing practices. He cited studies indicating that a significant percentage of patients diagnosed with unspecified endocrine disorders did not actually have those conditions, raising questions about the legitimacy of the diagnoses used to justify treatments. Vance's letter called for criminal prosecution of any healthcare providers who intentionally misled children to obtain transgender treatments.

The report also pointed out that the average healthcare cost for a minor is around $3,000, but the costs associated with transgender treatments can escalate dramatically, reaching up to $75,000 without surgery and nearly $170,000 with surgical interventions. This financial burden, coupled with the potential for lifelong medical costs, has raised alarms about the motivations behind the push for gender-affirming care. Vance's call for investigation reflects a growing concern over the ethical implications of how these treatments are marketed and provided to vulnerable populations, particularly minors. The HHS report included various forms of evidence, such as peer-reviewed literature, hospital records, and testimonies from whistleblowers, to support its claims about the alleged fraudulent practices in the healthcare system.
