High school football player practices with venomous snake in helmet

In Arkansas, a high school football player experienced a shocking incident during practice when he discovered a venomous snake inside his helmet. The player had been wearing the helmet for nearly an hour before he noticed unusual movement, prompting him to bring it to the attention of his coaches. Upon inspection, they found a two-foot-long cottonmouth snake hidden beneath the helmet's padding. The Maumelle High School athletic staff was left in disbelief at the unexpected discovery, as such occurrences are extremely rare in their experience. The snake had likely sought refuge in the helmet, which provided a dark and enclosed space.

The Maumelle Animal Services were called to the scene to safely remove the snake. Initially, the snake was misidentified as a copperhead, another venomous species, but upon arrival, the animal control officers confirmed it was indeed a cottonmouth. This species is known for its aggressive nature and is the second most venomous snake in Arkansas, following the rattlesnake. The incident raised awareness among the football team about the importance of checking their gear before use, as snakes can easily hide in unexpected places.

Animal Services Director Chris Davis noted that he had encountered snakes in various unusual locations, but never in a football helmet. The team took precautions by securing the helmet in a tote bag until the animal control officers arrived. To coax the snake out, the helmet was submerged in water, allowing the snake to emerge for air, which facilitated its safe capture. After the snake was removed, it was relocated to a forested area away from the school, ensuring the safety of both the students and the animal.

This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can arise in outdoor environments, especially during activities like sports. The athletic director, Kirk Horton, expressed his astonishment at the event, stating that he had never encountered anything like it in his ten years of experience.
