Wildfires surge as Britain faces extreme heat and drought conditions

In 2026, England and Wales are experiencing severe drought conditions, with nearly three-quarters of England and the entirety of Wales affected. This situation has been exacerbated by a record dry July and a very dry start to August, leading to high temperatures that have reached 38C (100F). As a result, the National Fire Chiefs Council reported that 1,017 wildfires have been recorded so far this year, matching the total for the entire previous year. The month of July was particularly alarming, with 458 incidents of wildfires, making it the busiest month on record. The Met Office has issued an amber 'extreme heat' warning for southern and central England, marking only the second such alert in four years. This warning is set to take effect from 9 am tomorrow and will last for 15 hours. In response to the heatwave, several rail services, including Chiltern Railways, East Midlands Railway, and Northern, have advised passengers to only travel if essential, as delays are expected due to the extreme weather. Reduced services have also been confirmed by other rail operators, including c2c, CrossCountry, Great Western Railway, Transport for Wales, and West Midlands Railway. The East Midlands Railway has announced that services between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich will only run between Sheffield and Norwich for today and tomorrow. The high temperatures pose a risk to railway reliability, prompting adjustments to the usual timetable. Additionally, fire chiefs have raised concerns about the role of disposable barbecues in causing wildfires, urging the public to exercise caution when outdoors. The ongoing drought and heatwave have created challenging conditions for families, with some, like Wilson Choudhry's family in Chigwell, facing significant hardships due to water outages. They have resorted to using buckets of water from a harvesting barrel for basic needs, highlighting the severe impact of the current climate crisis on everyday life.
