Puerto Rico faces severe water rationing due to drought conditions

Puerto Rico is currently grappling with a significant water crisis, primarily due to severe drought conditions affecting the island. The US Drought Monitor has reported that most of Puerto Rico is experiencing moderate to severe drought, which has been exacerbated by long-standing issues with the island's water infrastructure. As a result, authorities have implemented drastic water rationing measures, impacting hundreds of thousands of residents. The Carraizo reservoir, a crucial water source for the island, has been severely depleted, prompting officials to divide households into two groups. Each group experiences water supply shut-offs for 48 hours on a rotating basis. This rationing has left many residents, particularly in the capital city of San Juan, frustrated and confused about the schedule and availability of water. Reports indicate that some areas, like Morcelo, have not received promised water supplies, leading to further discontent among the population. The Governor of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer González, has acknowledged the challenges posed by the weather and the infrastructure issues, stating that the decision to ration water was made after careful evaluation of the current conditions. She emphasized that the situation is beyond the control of local authorities and is a direct result of the ongoing drought. This is not the first time Puerto Rico has faced such a crisis; similar water rationing measures were implemented in 2015 and 2020, affecting around 400,000 households at that time. The island's water crisis is compounded by environmental factors, including sediment buildup in reservoirs and the impact of climate change, which has led to more extreme weather events. The situation has prompted residents to queue for water from tanker trucks sent to affected areas, highlighting the urgency of the crisis. As the drought continues, the government has not provided a timeline for when the rationing measures will end, leaving many residents in uncertainty about their access to this essential resource.
