Elderly woman dies after rip current rescue at Provincetown beach

On Friday afternoon, a tragic incident unfolded at Herring Cove Beach near Hatches Harbor in Provincetown, Massachusetts, when three swimmers were caught in a rip current and pulled out to sea. The emergency call was received around 3 p.m., prompting a swift response from local authorities including the Provincetown harbormaster, police, and fire department, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, which deployed both a boat and a helicopter to assist in the search and rescue operation.

Two of the swimmers were quickly brought back to shore and were reported to be in stable condition. However, the third swimmer, an 81-year-old woman, remained missing for a longer period. The Coast Guard helicopter eventually spotted her floating in the water and directed rescue boats to her location. Once she was pulled from the water, the boat crew immediately began performing CPR. She was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her ordeal. Her identity has not been released to the public.

The Coast Guard expressed condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time." The town of Provincetown also issued a statement on social media, saying, "Our hearts are with those impacted by today's incident, as well as their families and loved ones. Incidents like this are a painful reminder of how quickly conditions on the water can become dangerous."

Rip currents are a significant hazard along coastlines, responsible for approximately 100 deaths each year in the United States, according to the United States Lifesaving Association. These powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water can pull swimmers away from shore, and experts advise that anyone caught in a rip current should not swim against it but rather swim parallel to the shore to escape its grip.
