Anthropic CEO calls AI backlash a crisis of trust

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has publicly responded to criticism that his warnings about AI risks have fueled a negative public perception of the technology. In a recent exchange, investor Gavin Baker argued on the All-In podcast and on X that Amodei's messaging has been disproportionately pessimistic, contributing to a backlash against AI and data centers in the United States. Baker suggested that Amodei, as the leader of a major AI company, should adopt a more positive advocacy stance for the industry. Amodei rejected this characterization, stating that his writing has been balanced between risks and benefits, and that he wrote his essay "Machines of Loving Grace" to inspire a more positive vision of AI's potential. However, he acknowledged that the public holds a negative view of AI and called this a big problem. He attributed this negativity not to his own warnings but to a deeper crisis of trust in companies, governments, and the tech industry, which he believes has been building for decades. Amodei also addressed the debate over regulation, arguing that Baker presented a false choice between unregulated distribution and concentration of power through regulation. He noted that many people outside Silicon Valley view regulation as a constraint on corporate power that benefits ordinary people, and he emphasized that Anthropic carefully designs its policy proposals to disadvantage frontier AI companies while advantaging smaller competitors. Amodei concluded that the most accurate criticism of AI companies, including Anthropic, is that they have not yet delivered on their promises to benefit the world, and he said they are working to fix that.
