Italy and Spain align border check expiry after Meloni-Sanchez talks on migration

On Friday, during the EU summit in Brussels, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met to ease tensions over migration. Italy agreed to extend its temporary border checks on arrivals from Spain by seven days, aligning the expiry with Spain's reciprocal measures. The checks were introduced in August after nearly 90,000 irregular migrants arrived in Ceuta. Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on the European Commission to scrutinise Spain's plan to regularise 600,000 undocumented migrants, arguing it contradicts EU policy. The dispute highlights divisions among EU leaders over migration.
