Record number of migrants cross English Channel in one small boat

On Saturday, a small boat made a historic crossing of the English Channel, carrying 230 migrants, marking the largest number ever recorded for a single vessel. Earlier in August, a separate incident saw over 170 people rescued after their boat caught fire while attempting to cross the Channel. The Home Office has stated that they are making progress in reducing the number of small boat crossings, with the lowest number recorded for July since 2020.

To combat the issue, the UK government has signed a payment-by-results deal with France, aiming to increase the presence of law enforcement on French beaches by 40%.
