NATO jet shoots down drone over Romania as Russia strikes Ukraine

On the night of August 15-16, 2026, Russia launched a series of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, killing at least one woman in Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and wounding seven others. Romania shares a 634-kilometer border with Ukraine, and Russian drones have repeatedly breached its airspace as Moscow escalates its bombing campaign. In July, a Romanian jet downed a suspected Russian drone, and in May a stray drone injured two people in the Romanian city of Galati when it collided with a building.

The war's impact has also spread to regional shipping lanes, with reports of mines and unmanned sea drones floating in the Black Sea, threatening commercial navigation. Meanwhile, in Russia, authorities reported a large-scale Ukrainian drone incursion overnight, with more than 100 drones downed heading towards Moscow. Emergency services were deployed to sites where debris fell, and three people were wounded, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Ukraine has increasingly targeted military, industrial, and logistical facilities deep inside Russia, arguing that these strikes are a response to Moscow's ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian towns and infrastructure.

These events highlight the escalating nature of the conflict, with both sides intensifying long-range strikes. The downing of the drone by a NATO jet underscores the alliance's increased involvement in securing the region's airspace, while the continued attacks on civilian areas raise concerns about the humanitarian toll.
