UN refugee agency warns 8.3 million displaced people face losing aid due to severe funding cuts

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, warned that nearly 8.3 million refugees and displaced people face losing vital assistance due to severe funding cuts. Available funding dropped from $5.2 billion in 2024 to $3.9 billion in 2025, while needs remain high. By end of July, UNHCR had received only $2.7 billion of the $8.5 billion required. The cuts have caused registration delays in Chad, reduced child protection in Ethiopia, and threatened services in Sudan. UNHCR also cut nearly 5,000 jobs, more than a quarter of its workforce. The United States, a major donor, has slashed foreign aid, contributing to the crisis.
