In the United States, the Cinerama Dome, a historic theater in Hollywood, is set to reopen in early 2028 after being closed since April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The theater, known for its unique 86-foot curved dome and three-projector 70mm capability, was originally commissioned in 1963 by Pacific Theatres founder William R. Forman. The reopening will be managed by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. The plan includes preserving the dome's iconic geodesic exterior and large logo, which have made it a landmark for over six decades. Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann has stated that the dome will serve as the chain's new West Coast flagship theater. Notably, the dome will not feature in-theater dining, a common offering in other Drafthouse locations. Alongside the dome, a 14-theater complex that was previously operated by ArcLight Cinemas will also reopen, providing in-theater dining options. This development comes at a time when moviegoers are increasingly expressing their desire for unique cinematic experiences, as highlighted by Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of Cinema United, who praised the Cinerama Dome as a treasured landmark for film enthusiasts.
