BioNTech to close three German production sites, cutting 1,800 jobs

BioNTech, the German pharmaceutical company known for its COVID-19 vaccine, announced today that it will close three production sites in Germany, affecting 1,800 jobs. The sites in Tübingen, Marburg, and Idar-Oberstein will shut down between 2027 and 2028. The company could not find buyers for the facilities. Demand for COVID-19 vaccines has dropped, and BioNTech has not launched other products. The company is now focusing on cancer research and mRNA-based therapies, but has reported a net loss of 1.35 billion euros in the first half of the year.
